Repair or Replace? How to Decide When a Device or Appliance Breaks

When a washing machine stops mid-cycle or a laptop refuses to turn on, the first thought is often to buy a new one. But many problems are cheap and quick to fix, especially with a technician who comes to your home. Here is a simple way to decide.

The 50% rule

A useful rule of thumb: if the repair costs less than half the price of a new device, and the device is not near the end of its life, repairing is usually the better choice.

Usually worth repairing

  • Laptops and PCs: slow performance, a failed hard drive, a broken keyboard, a worn battery, overheating, or Windows problems. Upgrades like an SSD or more RAM can even make them faster than before.
  • Smartphones: cracked screens, battery replacement and charging port problems.
  • Washing machines: drainage issues, door locks, belts and pumps.
  • Fridges and ACs: thermostat, fan and gas refill problems.
  • TVs: power and board faults, often caused by voltage spikes.

Usually better to replace

  • The device is more than 8 to 10 years old and has already had several repairs.
  • The repair costs more than half the price of a new model.
  • Parts are no longer available.
  • A newer model would save a lot of electricity, which matters with generator bills.

Don't forget your data

If a laptop or phone dies, your photos and files can often still be recovered. Avoid repeatedly switching it on and off, and ask a technician about data recovery before you give up on it.
