Make Your Old Laptop Faster: A Simple RAM and SSD Upgrade Guide

A slow laptop does not always need to be replaced. In many cases, adding more memory or switching to an SSD makes it feel like a new machine, for a fraction of the cost of buying one. Here is how to know what your laptop needs.

Signs your laptop needs an upgrade

  • It takes more than a minute to start up.
  • It freezes when you open several browser tabs or Office files.
  • Programs take a long time to open.
  • The hard drive light stays on constantly.

Upgrade 1: Switch to an SSD (the biggest difference)

If your laptop still uses a traditional hard drive (HDD), replacing it with an SSD is the single best upgrade you can make. Start-up time can drop from minutes to seconds. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD like the TeamGroup CX2 512GB fits most older laptops. Need extra space for backups, photos, or work files? A portable drive like the SanDisk 1TB Portable SSD or the faster SanDisk Extreme 2TB slips into your bag.

Upgrade 2: Add more RAM

RAM decides how many things your laptop can do at once. Today, 8GB is the minimum for everyday use, 16GB is comfortable for work and study, and 32GB is for gaming, video editing and design.

Laptops use smaller memory sticks called SODIMM. The key is to match the type your laptop supports:

DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable, so always check your model first. Some thin laptops also have memory soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded.

When is it time for a new laptop instead?

If your laptop is more than 7 or 8 years old, has a damaged screen or battery, or cannot run Windows 11, putting money into a new machine is usually smarter. Browse our laptops and computers to compare options.
